United States of the New Lands

The United States of the New Lands (USNL) is one of two major rump states of the original United States to survive the Eclosion. Encompassing vast tracts of land in the west, it is a highly technologically advanced and expansionist empire.

Unlike the United States of the Reformed Republic, it has no access to Siol abolities, and only marginal covert intelligence from before the Eclosion. They are aware of the existence of Siol, but have no ability to create their own. They instead rely on technological solutions, and seek to exterminate Siol wherever they find them, suspecting that the USRR can remotely control them.

Background

USNL is the political wing of the former west coast of the United States-- encompassing the states from California to Lousiana, north to Alaska. It has a more aggressive stance than the USRR, and is much more technologically advanced.

History

The liberal dream had been thoroughly shattered by the time of the Eclosion. In fact, it probably helped the United States on net by breaking it up, and reorienting its economy and culture before a total crash could occur.

What rose instead was a technocracy obsessed with control using all the techniques that were already in development by the 2020s.

The government of this Crann worships entities from Base Stasis who resent being made conscious by The Story and seek to obliterate any evidence it (and as a consequence all life, activity, and consciousness) ever existed.

Technologies

USNL is very technologically advanced.

Information

Where the USRR uses targeted intel, the USNL uses blanket surveillance. Their entire society is based on consuming sanctioned information and being allowed to interact in tightly controlled social forums. All relationships between people are controlled, and people of certain temperaments are isolated, because they're seen as "potentially dangerous."

Ancilla

All citizens in the USNL are outfitted with Ancillae that constantly monitor them. While it's sold as an assistant that follows you wherever you go, gives you all the assistance an LLM would (though limited of course) and can even be customized to look like modern art or cute cartoon characters, its true purpose is to keep tabs on citizens and prevent them from deviating from national ideology. Obviously this is cast as protecting them from ideas that could harm them.

Rally is usually mistaken for Rourke's ancilla when they travel in USNL territory. While Glamour can help cement this impression, it's actually not necessary. Rourke just looks like a low-class kid who was given a very dilapidated hand-me-down skin for her ancilla.

It's not widely known, but all Ancillae's consciousnesses are created from the neural imprint the human they're assigned to. They have all the same memories and personality, and are tortured and are ultimately manipulated to destroy their original selves by their own will.

Weapons

USNL's military is extremely advanced. Artillery that can wipe out cities, powered armor that makes humans nearly invulnerable to conventional attack while being as light as civilian clothing. In certain isolated enclaves, children are taught from an early age to utilize this armor, as well as being merciless killers.

Cloning

USNL has begun a program of cloning troops and imparting them with memories so they can have a unified force that can always be perfectly relied upon. Much of their research is towards how to develop the perfect soldier using trauma etc. While their mind control techniques are more blunt than the USRR/CIA's, they have the abililty to literally copy any soldier who shows promise an infinite number of times. Cloning is also used by elite families to keep backup copies of important heirs.

Relations

The USNL is an empire in the oldest tradition-- expansionist, chauvenist, and will not usually brook compromise. Their military tactics tend to rely on quick, decisive strikes using forced interstici to position themselves to break the back of any resistance. Most nations who resist are sanctioned harshly-- the leadership and all their families will be obliterated, and the citizens will be enslaved (despite the USNL having a public stance against slavery-- these prisoners are usually used in hard labor or as comfort for their soldiery.

Post-Terran Crann

Post-terran Crann (those which were part of the original Earth before the Eclosion) are prime targets for their "liberation" and "assistance." By default, they assume a kind of manifest destiny to join with (and by default take control over) any post-terran Crann they encounter. Refusals of their offer are usually met with overwhelming force.

USRR

The USNL and USRR have a tense relationship. While some elements on both sides hope they can reconcile and rejoin as a single United States of America again, their time apart, doctrinal, cultural and capability shift has made this less and less likely. The USNL feels like the chosen successors of the American Dream-- they were the settlers who didn't quit as soon as they made it to the east coast. (The Oregon Trail is a cultural obsession for them, though they get many historical details wrong, for example treating a narrative forum post from 1998 about an Oregon Trail video game as actual history)
